BOAT LOCKS, BOAT LIFTS AND WEIRS Boat Locks: A boat lock allows a boater to leave their boat in the water, while traversing different water levels. The main and largest boat lock in the Cape is the Chiquita Boat Lock, located down in the Southwest at Cape Harbour...
This lock is manned during specific hours, and is large enough to accomodate many different sizes of boats, from very small to very large.
The difference in water levels must be maintained for environmental reasons, but primarily to keep the protected mangroves alive that border the Southwest coast.
Boat Lift: This is where a boater actually has a mechanical arm pick up the boat, lift it out of the water, and swing it over a dam or weir to the other side, and replace it in the water.
Lifts are primarily unmanned, and residents needing to use the lift are given a key to operate the lift.
Weirs: A weir is an strip of earth or concrete that seperates freshwater from saltwater. The weir will usually allow the higher level freshwater to flow into the saltwater, but will not allow the saltwater to backflow into the freshwater.
This also prohibits any boat traffic from travelling between freshwater and saltwater without a lift.
