Area #4: The Spreader Canal

The Spreader Canal runs all the way along the Southwestern edge of Cape Coral.  It is called "The Spreader" because it spreads water from the canals through the mangroves.  It is the dividing line between Cape Coral and the Protected Wetlands.  The wetlands contain primarily a quarter to a half mile wide band of mangroves, which filter the waters and maintain a very important ecological balance in the area.  On the other side of the band of mangroves lies Matlacha Pass, Pine Island, Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, and beyond that is the Gulf of Mexico.

If these mangroves were to be disturbed, serious environmental damages could be done to the local plants and animals, especially birds and fish.

Because the wetlands will have no development, the Spreader offers fabulous views.  If you have a house on the Spreader, you do not look across the canal at a neighbor's house...

The only thing you see from your back yard is nature's own beauty, and breath-taking Florida sunsets!

There are some very large custom homes along the spreader, and more are going up every day...

Boats on the Spreader must go through the Chiquita Boat Lock down at Cape Harbour.
